Forget about the old "paper or plastic" question at the cash register. Never mind the "do you want that double bagged?". More and more shops in Belgium are not handing out any carrier bags at all with your purchases, and most supermarkets have switched to re-usable plastic bags which you buy from them, or biodegradable bags which you purchase at a low cost for one-time use. I've been caught short a few times - standing at the checkout without a bag on me - and looked for a creative way out. I had a few solitary skeins of different funky yarns with fluffy attitude, and so I knitted and crocheted some small drawstring bags, then asked my Gran to sew some carrier bags from very thin sturdy fabric (sewing is not my forte!). Added some yarn embellishments on the carrier bags, folded them into tiny rectangles which fit into the drawstring bags ...added some swivel clips which allow me to hang the pouches off a pair of jeans, off my handbag, etc. et voilą: EcoArt!
